Recovering specialists
Heaphy Billiards has been around for 21 years, located in Central Hawkes Bay. We have a very large workshop where the tables are built or refurbished. We have 3 copy lathes, 3 large sanders, awesome new thicknesser with individual cutting heads, planers, plus all the other equipment needed to produce a quality product.
We also have a showroom away from the factory (to avoid dust). In here is an Aladdins cave of cues, cases and accessories. We are lucky enough to have the charactures of snooker playes past and present that belong to Lloyd Lawrence, on display behind the cues.
Andy - Has been involved in the pool and snooker industry for well over 35 years and has extensive knowledge and experience with tables. As a former top player in both pool and snooker in NZ, he knows exactly how a table should play, and decided that if he couldnt buy one, he would make one. The rest they say, is history.
His recovering expertise is highly regarded by top level players throughout NZ. His passion for creating pool tables that play exceptionally well is his main ambition, and he spends many hours perfecting that. Many customers tell us their pool tables are more than that - they are beautiful pieces of furniture.
Andy also specialises in re-rubbering of cushions, making sure you get the optimum bounce using the highest quality rubber, along with new solid wood blocks. We just dont peel off the old rubber and replace it!!
Angela - occasionally can be found in the workshop, sanding, unpicking cushions or beds, or tidying up, but, mostly in the showroom which houses probably the best selection of cues and cases in NZ.
Back in 2006, we got a call from the manager of Westpac Stadium asking if we had a really nice billiard table we could install into a corporate box for some of the members of the Rolling Stones to play on before and after their concert. Initially I thought.. hmmm... prank call, but after talking to him for a while, he wasnt joking! As it happened, we had a fully refurbished billiard table that was going to be installed into a new Ryman village in Remuera a couple of weeks later. So we loaded it up just prior to Easter, drove down to Wellington, all excited about what we might see. The corporate box was'nt not really big enough for a billiard table, but Andy managed to position it so there was only one corner that might pose a problem.
It was fun seeing the Rolling Stones entourage getting the other corporate box's ready for each of the band members. Micks room was called "Workout" and he had bunches of white roses all round the room along with a treadmill. Keiths room was called "Recovery"... for reasons we all know.
Just prior to the concert starting, Steve, the manager of the stadium had to take the doctor up to see Mick as he had a sore throat, and he saw all the band members playing on the table and they had some very favourable things to say about it. Andy also left his cue their to be used and Mick was using that :)
The morning after the concert, we got there early to see what little treasures they had left, well, in the main room there would have been 50 large pizza boxes stacked up high, some had not been touched. There was evidence that a good night had been had. Ronnie had hand written the song list and it had been folded up, but it was left lying on a table, so we grabbed that. We also got some of the white roses (and dried them), along with other bits of memorabillia.
This probably would have been the highlight of all our jobs we have had in the 21 years of Heaphy Billiards.
